Sometimes the creative paths we end up walking aren’t the ones we originally planned.
They evolve. They pivot. They unfold slowly over time through a series of moments that only make sense when we look back.
That was one of the themes that kept surfacing in my conversation with composer Roland Bingaman on the second episode of The Power of Human Stories.
Roland and I have known each other for years. I’ve always admired the music he creates and the thoughtful way he approaches his work. But sitting down to talk with him for the podcast revealed layers of his journey that I hadn’t fully understood before.
Like many creative careers, his story isn’t a straight line.
It’s a series of seasons.
One of the early turning points Roland shared was realizing just how present music was in the stories he loved.
Film. Television. The emotional moments in the movies he grew up watching.
There was always music guiding the experience.
For a long time, composers felt like distant figures — people who existed somewhere behind the curtain of the entertainment industry. But at some point that perception shifted. Roland began to realize that the people writing the music for these stories weren’t mythical figures.
They were real people.
Attainable people.
And once that realization settled in, the idea that music could become more than just a passion started to feel possible.
Not guaranteed.
But possible.
One of the things we talk about in this episode is the tension that many creatives experience when pursuing meaningful work.
The moments of excitement and inspiration.
And the moments where doubt creeps in.
Roland is refreshingly honest about those seasons. He talks openly about the times he questioned whether continuing in music made sense at all.
That kind of honesty is something I’ve always appreciated in conversations like this.
Because behind every creative career that appears polished on the outside is usually a long stretch of uncertainty that most people never see.
The truth is that creative work often requires a kind of perseverance that isn’t visible in the final product.
It’s quiet.
It’s personal.
And sometimes it’s heavy.
One of the most powerful parts of our conversation comes when Roland shares about walking through serious health challenges with his wife.
Hospital visits.
Ambulance calls.
The emotional weight that comes with watching someone you love suffer.
In those moments, music stopped being just a craft or a career pursuit. It became something else entirely.
A way to process what was happening.
A way to sort through the emotions that didn’t always have clear answers.
What struck me most during that part of the conversation was Roland’s description of hope. He talked about how, in many ways, the person enduring the suffering was often the one holding onto the deepest sense of faith and optimism.
That perspective shaped the music he was writing during those seasons.
And over time, those pieces began resonating with other people walking through similar struggles.
Sometimes creative work connects with people not because of technique or style — but because it carries the emotional weight of real life behind it.
One of the reasons I started The Power of Human Stories podcast was to create space for conversations like this.
So often we only see the finished work.
The film.
The music.
The final product.
But behind every piece of work that moves us is a human story — a set of experiences, challenges, and moments that shaped the person who created it.
Roland’s story is a great reminder that the work we create often grows out of the lives we’re living.
And sometimes the most meaningful art comes from the seasons that challenge us the most.
